On the evening of December 25, the TTJA received information that three maritime communication cables between Estonia and Finland have been disrupted: two communication cables belonging to the Elisa group and one communication cable belonging to CITIC Telecom.
According to the telecommunications companies providing telecommunications services via cables, the outages do not have a noticeable impact on end users, and all services and communications between Estonia and Finland are operational.
The cause of the disruptions is currently unknown. The owners of the cables are carrying out repair work, and in the process, the relevant authorities will also investigate what could have caused the failures.
Estonia's external connections are duplicated multiple times, meaning that if submarine cables break, alternative functioning submarine cables or land cables going to Latvia can be used to ensure cross-border internet access and the functioning of various services.
